Dear Friend,

Greetings from MSF!

Doctors Without Borders, or Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent medical humanitarian organisation. MSF received Nobel peace prize in 1999 for its life saving work across the globe. We provide medical assistance to people with lack of medical access, who are affected by conflicts, epidemics, or are excluded from healthcare.

One of India's major health problems is Tuberculosis (TB). World Health Organization estimates that India has the world's largest tuberculosis epidemic; In 2020, India accounted for 26% of the incidents in TB cases across the world, which is one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. India had an estimated 130,000 Drug-resistant tuberculosis cases in 2018, where patients don't respond to at least one of the primary TB drugs. The patients, largely, either do not receive timely and accurate diagnoses, or are unable to access the drug regimens of Bedaquiline and Delamanid.

Through the extensive work of our team, MSF continues to provide free diagnostics and treatment for severe forms of DRTB in states like Maharastra.

Vaishnavi, a seven-year-old girl, was diagnosed with extra-pulmonary DRTB in 2020. Living in a makeshift home with her family, Vaishnavi caught the infection without any family history. Through numerous references, Vaishnavi's case reached MSF where she was prescribed with Bedaquiline and Delamanid pediatric formulations. Soon, her treatment started showing positive effects.

Her mother's biggest concern is the lack of disclosure if anybody is living with TB. Owing to the stigma around TB, even healthcare volunteers have to conceal their identities while visiting patient's homes.

Meanwhile, little Vaishnavi doesn't have an idea about the disease she has. She merely consumes one pill and recovers everyday.

Currently, we cover three elements in our community outreach activities: Contact Tracing, Patient Counselling, Infection Prevention and Control.

The story of Vaishnavi is one among the many whose lives have been influenced because of the generous support of individuals like YOU. 2022 has proven the importance of resilience and togetherness. The need to continue Medical Humanitarian work in India is of the utmost importance - now more than ever!

With your invaluable support, our team continues to provide holistic treatment to the ones most in need. Help us continue our work and be a part of our mission to save countless lives across India.
